How to commission a piece of furniture
1. Budget Decide on your budget; bespoke handmade furniture is not cheap. The type of timber and complexity of detailing can affect the price considerably.
2. Style Think about the style of furniture that appeals to you, much of our work is based on the rectilinear style typical of the Arts and Crafts movement but we can work in any style that suits you. We can take any of the designs shown and adjust them to suit your needs and taste, or we can design a piece of furniture completely from scratch. Some clients have produced an outline design and we have worked with them to finalise this as a finished piece of furniture.
3. Size Note the space available for the furniture, or if you like, provide a floor plan of the room showing where the furniture is to be situated. Photographs or sketches of the room and any interesting architectural features can be very useful. Sometimes these spark off great ideas.
4. Cupboards and storage Supply a list for the type of thing you plan to keep in the cupboard i.e. crockery, glasses, cutlery etc. If you require display areas list the items to be displayed or give an indication of what they might be. Do you require glass doors or open shelving?
5. Dining sets How many people will you need full place settings for? Do you require an extending table? How many chairs? Would you like leather upholstery or will you provide a fabric for us to upholster the chairs with?
6. Bedrooms This is a difficult one and normally requires a site visit but some of the other points are valid. The more you can define your needs the easier it is for us to come up with solutions.
7. Desk Is it for a computer or is it a writing desk? Is it for a domestic or office situation? Do you require separate filing cabinets or filing drawers included? Do you want to be able to close it all away as in a roll top desk or do you just want plenty of workspace?
8. Existing designs from our portfolio can be changed to suit special requirements. This usually means a change of timber and variation of the detailing; it can even be a change of size, although unless this is simply a change in scale, we reserve the right to charge for redesign.
9. Large or corporate projects Boardroom tables and large projects will need a site visit so please contact us to arrange a mutually convenient appointment.
10. Presentation We will normally supply dimensioned CAD sketches with a perspective view of the proposed design where this aids the understanding of the design. After consultation we will make any adjustments necessary to our design to suit your needs, and will submit revisions for your approval.
11. Do we charge for our designs? This is very dependant on the extent of the work needed to meet your requirements. For a simple commission it is unlikely that we will charge for basic design work but for more complex work entailing significant man-hour commitment we will charge for the design. A big project that requires a site visit would cost typically £150.00 plus VAT. This amount would be refundable against the final cost of the furniture if you continue with the project. Our fees are very reasonable and only cover expenses.
12. How to order We ask for a one third deposit with your order, the balance being due on delivery. Time scales to complete work varies but major commissions will normally be delivered four to six months from date of order. Smaller items, like our boxes, will normally be delivered within one month from placing the order. If something is required by a particular date (e.g. a birthday or Christmas) then please allow plenty of time to make the item as we normally close our work schedule for Christmas delivery, in October!
